Frequently Asked Questions

What is family governance, and how does it fit within Wellspring’s family office services?

Family governance gives family members a framework to communicate, participate in important decisions, and prepare for changing responsibilities across generations. Within Wellspring’s family-office services, it complements wealth management by helping family members understand their roles, build financial knowledge, and develop the skills to make thoughtful financial decisions.

Wellspring helps each generation build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become thoughtful stewards of family wealth. We help families clarify their values and purpose, strengthen communication around wealth, and create opportunities for younger family members to learn and participate. Education is tailored to each person’s experience and readiness, from financial fundamentals to investing, philanthropy, real estate, or an operating business. Over time, family members gain a deeper understanding of their role and the responsibility that comes with significant wealth.

Before the meeting: Your family’s Chief Family Advisor gathers input from family members, defines the meeting’s purpose, and develops the agenda in advance. Topics are selected based on what needs to be addressed and what family members want to discuss.

During the meeting: Wellspring facilitates the meeting directly rather than outsourcing it to an unfamiliar third party. Depending on the agenda, the advisor might guide a shared-values or communication exercise, address generational perspectives, or lead education on a financial topic relevant to the family. Every meeting is tailored to each family.

Ongoing: The relationship continues with the same Wellspring team that knows your family. Each meeting can inform future conversations and education, building on the understanding developed over time.

We start with the family rather than a predetermined governance model or education program. We take the time to understand each family’s dynamics, priorities, and goals, then shape governance and education around what will be most useful to them. As families evolve and responsibilities change, we adapt the approach to keep family members prepared for what comes next.

Wellspring’s Wealth & Tax Planning and Investment Management services address the financial structures and decisions surrounding wealth. Family Governance & Education helps family members build the knowledge and structure to prepare for the responsibilities that come with it.

Those responsibilities can take many forms:

  • A change in family roles may call for financial education before a significant transition.
  • A conversation about aging may raise questions about who will coordinate care and how other family members should be involved.
  • A concern about privacy or personal security may require both a family decision and specialized expertise.

Your family’s Chief Family Advisor coordinates across the Wellspring team and connects the resources each situation requires. Through Be Well, families also have access to experienced professionals in health and wellness, elder care, travel and transportation, privacy, and security as needs arise.
